Thank you Wordpress Timestamp.

September 17, 2007 – 9:00 am| By admin

Lately I’ve been busy. Honestly with school starting back up, it’s been a bit of a change of routine. I’ve had to now manage starting up a new forum, managing my current sites, keeping up with my blogs, oh and work and school! I think I’d be really going crazy if it weren’t for the Wordpress Timestamp. Yeah, this is really just another plug for the ever so useful feature. Really though, I don’t know how far behind i’d be without it at this point.

Oh and my girlfriend pointed me to dailypuppy.com last week.? That site is worse than drugs!? Don’t say i didn’t warn you.

Day 1: The Internet is Not a Series of Tubes

September 10, 2007 – 9:00 am| By admin

By now most of you have heard that joke that “The Internet’s a Series of Tubes!” Well, yes that’s a joke. Also, no it is NOT true. Also in case you were wondering I’ll explain to you where abouts this joke came from and what that darned Internet really is, at least I’ll take a stab at the latter explanation. Here I go!

That darned “Tubes” joke is the fault of Senator Ted Stevens. This 82 year old politician happens to be the the chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. A fairly intelligent fellow one would assume? Well on the fateful day of June 28th, 2006 he made the remarks as to why his email and internet connection seemed slow.

They want to deliver vast amount of information over the Internet, and again, the Internet is not just something you dump something on,” he said. “It’s not a big truck, it’s a series of tubes. And if you don’t understand, those tubes can be filled. If they’re filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line, it’s going to be delayed by anyone who puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/07/19/politics/main1819525.shtml)

Now let’s think about this one more time…. maybe after listening to the audio version of this quote…

Nope…. not a big truck…. not tubes either… While I let my brain process this nonsense, I think I’ll add the explanation of the Internet for tomorrow. So please come back so I can straighten out this nonsense.

It’s currently rainy and about 75 degrees

September 7, 2007 – 8:15 am| By admin

So the weather is pretty crappy out right now. I think the drive to work took me about 10 minutes longer than usual from people slowing down because of the rain. Despite the fact that Michigan seems to have two seasons, Winter and Construction, I was passed by an Aston Martin going the opposite way down the road right near my work. Needless to say, I was a bit shocked.

Don’t wait on Resolutions

September 7, 2007 – 12:30 am| By admin

It doesn’t need to be December 31st, 2007 for you to be making those resolutions. Most times people simply call them goals. If you can tell you’d like to make some changes or find something you want to achieve, set a goal and work to get there. This was a recent epiphany of mine. I realized yeah by next spring when i’m done with college i want to x,y,z…. Well why not start working toward those things now! Hell, it will only help me get there by then if i start working toward it now.

Let’s try breaking this down:

  • Make a clear and concise goal for yourself
  • Identify what you will do go archive your goal
  • Identify markers along your path to meeting your goal so that you know you are making success.
  • Let other people (friends, family, etc.) know about your goals so that they may help support you in achieving your goal.

Good luck, and don’t wait for New Year’s to roll around if you know there are changes you want to make in your life. Goals don’t need to be once a year resolutions.

Why do I want to earn money online?

September 6, 2007 – 12:30 am| By admin

why do i want to earn money online? Maybe it never occurred to anyone that someone has a reason greater than “To make money.” as to why they are trying to make money in a certain way. Making money online has a particular appeal to me. While many people say that earning money online affords them more free time, I’ll agree. However being a full time university student my biggest reason to making money online is simply because working online, or being able to blog and work on sites from my apartment is more time efficient for me with my full school schedule as well. There’s no time wasted commuting from point A to B. I can simply make a blog post or two, or three if i’m lucky, timestamp them or post them, and head back to my homework or studying.

Now you’re just saying, “Well why the hell are you an different than anyone else who’s at university trying to make money online?” I’ll say it, because I’m better than most of those other guys. Well maybe not better, but yeah, better. Actually its just simply the fact that I’m trying to get through my senior year, all the 400-level course work and hassle. Also I’m a Microsoft Student Partner as well. The combination of time obligations really makes the online money earning bit a sweet deal.

So that’s why i do it!

Are we developers or businessmen?

September 5, 2007 – 12:30 am| By admin

Disclaimer: That was a non-gender specific use of the term businessmen in the title. I’m not trying to step on any toes.

So there’s a ton of “to do” with the make money online niche. Given my own personal background in software and website development I seem to get much more fun out of creating a site from scratch. This leads me to ponder the question of in creating a site or piece of software for the purpose of profit, am I more of a developer of businessman? I’d say this applies to bloggers as well. Are you a journalist or money maker? This question seems ripe for the asking as more often we see people of one profession taking up residence online, in a new online company, or starting a new blog.

So “John” in development starts a blog. Is this just an method for himself and others to keep track of his progress online, or has he taken on a new interest in the literary part of it? Does he fancy himself a bit of a writer as well as coder, so he’s decided to let his writing seep into his work? Or perhaps “Fred” the guy in the cube next to “John” who since college has been a die hard developer realizes the sites he creates for CompanyXYZ have the potential of making money online through residual income methods, and decides to build and start a few sites of his own outside of the office?

Without heading too far out into left field, I’d like to say that it has become apparent to me that as a person who has studied software development in academia, and who has blogged in one arena or another for a number of years now, that people with these skills are quite dynamic any may fall into any number of “professions” or stereotypes.

Just a bit of food for thought, being as dynamic as this generation of online entrepreneurs have become, how do you view yourselves? What do you label yourself as?
