Don’t wait on Resolutions

September 7, 2007 – 12:30 am| By admin

It doesn’t need to be December 31st, 2007 for you to be making those resolutions. Most times people simply call them goals. If you can tell you’d like to make some changes or find something you want to achieve, set a goal and work to get there. This was a recent epiphany of mine. I realized yeah by next spring when i’m done with college i want to x,y,z…. Well why not start working toward those things now! Hell, it will only help me get there by then if i start working toward it now.

Let’s try breaking this down:

  • Make a clear and concise goal for yourself
  • Identify what you will do go archive your goal
  • Identify markers along your path to meeting your goal so that you know you are making success.
  • Let other people (friends, family, etc.) know about your goals so that they may help support you in achieving your goal.

Good luck, and don’t wait for New Year’s to roll around if you know there are changes you want to make in your life. Goals don’t need to be once a year resolutions.

Pay Per Post + Facebook = Big Trouble

August 8, 2007 – 8:29 pm| By admin

So on July 31st I got an email from Pay Per Post telling me about something new from them for facebook called “The Tack.” Basically here’s the info. In my opinion the trainwreck starts here.

Well I say that because I am NOT a fan of PPP, even though I understand it does make some people quite a bit of money. My opinion which I know is shared by at least a few others is that by sponosoring posts you are potentially losing your ability to state your own opinion and become more or less a salesperson.

Anyways, rant aside, I think that the combination of Pay Per Post in the Facebook realm is bad news. I’m already a bit uneasy about all the new applications popping up for Facebook everyday, and this one just happened to frighten me a bit more than usual.

June 07 Recap

June 30, 2007 – 11:36 pm| By admin

Ok, I’ll say it. This past month may have possibly been the most important month of my life. This is in terms of my education in regards to learning how to earn money online, to date. That may not make much sense, but I’m pretty sure this post can back that claim up. Here I go:

The 4-Hour Workweek
This goes first. I started reading the book by Tim Ferriss after reading Darren Rowse’s review of it. Without a doubt the book made me think about how I plan my post-college life. Can I stand to work a 40 hour workweek? I’m not sure. I’m pretty darn sure though, that I’d love to have alternative money making methods other than working in a cube-city. Thumbs down, to cubicles. I know I started reading the book in May, but I’ll add it to the recap because I finished it during the bus ride home from FOOA and the concepts are just now starting to make sense.

Future of Online Advertising
Once again, thank you Kumiko for allowing me to get a ticket to go to this event. I’ve already blogged about the event to a great extent so I think what I’ve got to say about it now on the fact that the networking was great. But networking aside, going to the event allowed me to see where all these people see online advertising going. Darn, i’ll say I think the majority of them were too much in it for the money than they knew. Darren Rowse’s talk, coming from the point of view of the publisher made so much more sense. I think that uneven mix of marketer vs. publisher content made me realize how important it is not only to make myself marketable to companies possibly looking for a publisher, but for me to find the right company for me to want to align myself with.

Adsense Buys my Daily Coffee…
Darren’s talk really hit home and made sense. Why? Simply because it was the truth about marketers and their relationship with bloggers. Or as many bloggers wanted to know, how do I make money?

The chart above was from Darren’s presentation (which is available here) illustrating how much money problogger.net readers make from blogging. He made the point that 30% of his readers can’t pay for their daily coffee from the amount of money they make from their blogs. I think that may have been my wake up call.

Monetizing Websites
I think that this past month was the first time I took earning money online seriously. I purchased one site, and am working at growing a few more. My total earnings this month wont get me a paycheck from Adsense or YPN just yet, but I can tell from my trends in impressions and earnings that things are going well and I’ve definitly got an upward trend going in earnings. Also I think I’ve learned that diversifying my monetization options are the way to go. So far I’ve got 4 monetized sites useing two different avenues of earning. This blog isn’t monetized yet, but may be in the near future. I like that I don’t have ads here, but also I like to earn money. I’m currently on the fence about monetizing this blog so we’ll wait and see.

So what have I gained?? Oh among great contacts, also a new sense of understanding what goes into automating my income. And by automating my income I mean setting up my websites I run as a network of sites which I can work on both with some urgency (my blogs) and also others with little to no upkeep. As I’m new to this, and the sites are also relatively young, my income is still rising, and I’m not even at a point of seeing it level off. Yes, I’m new to this. However, I can only see good things in my future of online earnings if current trends continue.

King Nomar extends his empire…

June 13, 2007 – 1:16 pm| By admin

My buddy Nomar from KingNomar.com is extending his grasp on the internet with his latest venture, 9MB.com. 9MB.com is a webmasters forum that he’s just starting, but I can say straight away that I really like it. Now, yes he current does have a contest running to try to get more people interested in this forum, and who isn’t a fan of a free $200, but this forum has more to it than just the money.

  • I’ll start simple, I love the design. It’s not boring like some larger webmaster forums I can think of. The design is something that I will say is pretty to look at.
  • 9MB.com is currently very small about 16 or so people. There aren’t any huge super-forum-trolls, and you wont be a billion posts back from the top guys. In a sense, everyone is equal. Oh and with that there isn’t any annoying infractions policy.
  • I know that this forum is pretty much a baby, and this contest just started, but people have been joining all morning!? At this rate I’d say there will be 100+ members by next Monday.

Oh and because everyone loves money, here’s the link to the contest rules.

Creativity and Creation

May 8, 2007 – 11:24 am| By admin

So you’ve got a great idea. Good. Where do you go from there? I know i’ve found myself asking that very question more than a few times. I’d like to try to start a discussion on how to take that step from creativity to creation.

SO I GOT THIS IDEA:

New ideas are the key to change. YouTube, Digg, Flickr, Facebook, all are great sites that were created because something didn’t already exist. Personally I keep a little notebook with me pretty much all of the time to write down any good ideas I come up with. My own view on creativity isn’t so much that great ideas are born, but rather that they are derived from problems or gaps in that which already exists.

Great new ideas are solutions to problems. What did YouTube do, it allowed anyone to post and share video online, and make it easily available. How about Facebook? Well MySpace already existed, but Facebook took the preexisting group of college students and enabled then not only to network as MySpace did, but made it easier to network among college students. Being able to solve a problem, or to be more efficiently solve a problem is what enables a new idea to take off.

WHAT DO I DO WITH MY IDEA?

The better question here is what can you do? When I come up with a new idea I try as best I can to diagram it. What does this new idea for a site, a web application, etc., what does it do? By breaking down you idea into parts it will be easier to deal with and to create. Breaking down you idea allows you to see what you can create using your skillset, and what you may need to seek out the help of others for.

The “other” way to becoming a six figure blogger

April 23, 2007 – 10:45 am| By admin

So you want to make money. Who doesn’t? But let’s say that you’ve got a few good ideas, you are innovative, and know what to do with your time and money to get something out of those ideas.

Get those ideas down on paper, create your gadget, piece of software, or “next best thing”. But how and why are people going to find out about your new item?? The blogosphere!? Yes, friends the blogosphere is here to help.

Now this isn’t a sure fire 6 figure method, but projecting you and your product out to an interested audience is key for audience uptake. So have at it!

Let’s look at what may be involved:

  • Start your own domain for you or the product
  • Start a blog on this domain
  • Join Technorati
  • Network, Network, Network!
  • Allow user input from your blog to seep into your changes and modifications to the device. Make it more user-friendly.

Now ideally people will be gaining interest in your product. Maybe you can even sell some through your site. If you’re really lucky someone may offer you say “six-figures” to buy the product from you?

Just a thought?
