Day 1: The Internet is Not a Series of Tubes
By now most of you have heard that joke that “The Internet’s a Series of Tubes!” Well, yes that’s a joke. Also, no it is NOT true. Also in case you were wondering I’ll explain to you where abouts this joke came from and what that darned Internet really is, at least I’ll take a stab at the latter explanation. Here I go!
That darned “Tubes” joke is the fault of Senator Ted Stevens. This 82 year old politician happens to be the the chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. A fairly intelligent fellow one would assume? Well on the fateful day of June 28th, 2006 he made the remarks as to why his email and internet connection seemed slow.
They want to deliver vast amount of information over the Internet, and again, the Internet is not just something you dump something on,” he said. “It’s not a big truck, it’s a series of tubes. And if you don’t understand, those tubes can be filled. If they’re filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line, it’s going to be delayed by anyone who puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material. Now let’s think about this one more time…. maybe after listening to the audio version of this quote…
Nope…. not a big truck…. not tubes either… While I let my brain process this nonsense, I think I’ll add the explanation of the Internet for tomorrow. So please come back so I can straighten out this nonsense.
