So I’ve got a bit of clean up to do

October 8, 2007 – 10:27 am| By admin

I’ve been a bit lazy, a bit busy, as of late. Basically my life has been hectic and I’ve neglected this blog. There I’ve said it. So today I’ve got a bit of free time so later in the day I’m planning a bit of cleaning up of lose ends. Hopefully I’ve got a bit of energy and can utilize the timestamp to breathe a bit of life back into this blog. I’m feelin’ optimistic. :-)

A new beginning

August 27, 2007 – 8:42 am| By admin

So this change has been some time in the making. I’d been working on a new theme of one type or another for a few months now, and had the prototypes of this one going about as far back as late May. My initial idea was to try to get away from the layout designs which have been coming so much of a standard. All these blogs with a main body portion, and one or two sidebars seemed a bit old.

I started playing with different designs then decided to try to work with something similar to the layout of a comic book page. It was that type of layout that made me think of using the same ideas of one large “block” and smaller “blocks” for recent posts. Also toward the bottom we’ve got a block for TLA, and one for RSS. Below that is the somewhat standard bottom columns for blogroll, categories, admin and search.

Hopefully this new theme is well received and works out well for me. Feel free to leave a note and let me know what you think!

Busy, busy, busy!

August 16, 2007 – 12:54 am| By admin

Lately I’ve been trying to diversify my efforts and possibly find a few more ways to make a few bucks. Unfortunately this has taken its toll on my posting frequency. Lately I’ve started a few new projects, decided to start working on a project I’d put aside some time ago, and also I’ve got something in store for this blog.

Also in a few weeks I start my senior year of college. (oh geez!) So i’ll also have the added stress of classes. Hopefully this planning and work i’m doing now will make the transition back to the school year a relatively easy one.

I’m excited for September.

Oh Noes! Tagged again!

July 29, 2007 – 10:48 pm| By admin

This time Derrich Tagged me in the Geek Link train! (I didn’t know this thing existed till i was tagged. So here we go!)

——- START COPYING HERE ———-

Geek Train - All Aboard!

  1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post and linkback to the blog(s) that put you on the list in the paragraph. You MUST do this. No-one plans on getting slapped for duplicate content any time soon, do they?
  2. Next, copy the list of originals below COMPLETELY and add it to your own blog. If you’d like a different keyword for your blog then change it, when you do your post, and it should pass to most blogs with that keyword, provided the train keeps on spreading.
  3. Take the adds from the blog that added you and place them in the “Originals” list.
  4. Add at least three new favourite blogs of yours to keep the train going, e-mail the blog owners (or comment on one of their posts) and insist that they post.

The Originals:
(The kick-ass) Nate Whitehill
(The original) 13-Year Old Blogger

I got tagged by the blogging tips link train!

July 29, 2007 – 10:36 pm| By admin

Joel Szerlip from WorldOfJoel decided to tag me in the latest and I think one of the most interesting memes to date. Check out what’s up below.

-Start Copy-

It’s very simple. When this is passed on to you, copy the whole thing, skim the list and put a * star beside those that you like. (Check out especially the * starred ones.)

Add the next number (1. 2. 3. 4. 5., etc.) and write your own blogging tip for other bloggers.

Try to make your tip general. After that, tag 10 other people. Link love some friends!

Just think – if 10 people start this, the 10 people pass it onto another 10 people, you have 100 links already!

What keeps the reader coming back - Part 2

June 26, 2007 – 12:07 am| By admin

Segmented Posts:

Look at my title, see the “Part 2″? That’s what this post is all about. Splitting topics and posts up into segmented parts to keep those readers coming back. Well this tactic can be used for a few reasons, most notably, either making posts smaller in length to break up a longer talk, or to group posts of the same or similar topics.

A while back while I was researching how to create a proxy site I literally StumbledUpon Dave Turnbull’s “Making A Successful Proxy” series. While the series had already been posted in length, I could easily go from one post to the next and follow the ideas. Adversely the individual posts allowed me to easily follow subtopics. Before you just look at my blog and say “Duh!” realize that the post would be quite long and time consuming to read if you were to try to take in all that information at once.

Matt Coddington also utilized the tactic of segmented posting on NetBusinessBlog.com when he covered the topic of “minisites.” While Matt’s use only covered the two posts, it easily linked the posts and continued the same idea, which he had broken up into 10 easy to follow steps. These posts for some reason reminded me of an episode of This Old House, in the way things were explained, but unlike This Old House, the concept of minisites is something which I was interested in and may potentially use while creating sites.
